Doha: Pioneering Qatari woman Sheikha Asma Al Thani reached the North Pole and raised the flag of Qatar there on April 21. She reached the North Pole along with an international team of women from across the Middle East and Europe.

Sheikha Asma Al Thani, Director of Marketing & Communications for the Qatar Olympic Committee, posted photos on her Instagram account with a caption which read: "We made it to the North Pole, the Qatari flag has been raised on the top of the world for the first time... at 7 pm on the 21st of April 2018."

She posted a video in her Instagram story, in which she thanked everyone for their support and encouraged all to go out and make it happen.
Sheikha Asma said: "Marhaba, I'm in the North Pole. I am finally here, it has been 2 years and hard, hard journey. I want to thank you all for your support, I hope this can you believe that anything is possible if you set your mind to it, no challenge too difficult, no dreams too hard, go out and make it happen."

The expedition is spearheaded by Felicity Aston MBE, a pioneer of polar exploration and the first woman to ski across the Antarctic alone, covering 1,084 miles in 59 days, and it saw 11 women breaking cultural boundaries from across Europe and the Middle East.

On April 14 Sheikha Asma posted a photo of her embarking on the path breaking expedition on Instagram and said: “Today we start on our journey.. it’s been 2 years of preparations, learning new things, challenging my abilities.. nothing is impossible if you set you heart and mind to it..”

The expedition aims to inspire all women to reach beyond the expectation of others and to raise awareness around global warming.
