Doha: Qatar and China are strategic partners, and the collective efforts against the pandemic will further deepen friendship between both the countries, said Chinese Ambassador to Qatar, H E Zhou Jian.

“Cooperation between China and Qatar made progress despite the pandemic. The two countries signed a contract for building LNG ships, which will further expand Qatar’s LNG fleet,” H E the Ambassador said in his speech yesterday on the occasion of the 71st Anniversary of the Founding of the People’s Republic of China.

The event, which was held at the Ritz-Carlton Doha was attended by Minister of Transport and Communications, H E Jassim bin Saif Ahmed Al Sulaiti; the Director of Protocol of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, H E Ambassador Ibrahim Yousuf Abdullah Fakhroo, and the Dean of the Diplomatic Corps and the Ambassador of Eritrea to Qatar, H E Ali Ibrahim Ahmed.

The Chinese Ambassador noted that, “China Railway Construction Corporation Ltd worked on the construction of Lusail Stadium without stop in order to have it ready before the 2022 FIFA World Cup.”

The green, intelligent and water-saving technology developed by China’s Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region has been adopted in Qatar, contributing to Qatar’s sustainable development. The pandemic has given prominence to the “contactless economy”, expanding space for China-Qatar cooperation in the new industries and business formats, he said.

The Chinese diplomat affirmed that “China and Qatar trusted and supported each other, giving each other greater confidence and determination to defeat the epidemic.”

The Qatari government, the Ambassador said, along with some Qatari corporations, has donated 300 tonnes of medical supplies including surgical masks and disinfectant to China. Qatar Airways transported PPEs to China through its global network for free.

“Chinese companies in Qatar donated one million pairs of surgical gloves and 7,000 sets of protective gowns, contributing to Qatar’s triumph over the epidemic.

“Both China and Qatar have actively participated in international cooperation. Together we support the WHO in playing a lead role in the global fight against COVID-19,” H E the Ambassador said. Both countries, he added, can jointly build a community with a shared future, create an “oasis” of development and renewal, and embrace the bright future of a common community for mankind.

Regarding the COVID-19 vaccine, he said that: “The COVID-19 vaccine development and deployment in China, once available, will be made a global public good. This will be China’s contribution to the accessibility and affordability of the vaccine in developing countries.
