Denver - Denver Nuggets guard Ty Lawson, the NBA team's top scorer with 16.7 points a game, was arrested Friday morning on suspicion of drunk driving, speeding and careless driving.
Lawson posted $1,500 bond and was released from jail, according to the Denver Sheriff’s Department. A court date on the matter was set for January 27.
"We have been made aware of an incident involving Ty Lawson early this morning," the Nuggets said in a statement. "Per team policy and out of respect for the legal process, we will have no further comment at this time."
Denver television station KUSA reported Lawson was arrested at 1:19 a.m. after radar recorded his vehicle going 60 mph in a 35-mph zone. Police told the station Lawson failed a field sobriety test and said he had consumed alcohol before taking the wheel.
Lawson, third in the NBA with 9.9 assists a game, posted messages on his Facebook page saying he was taking part in a team charity social event with fans Thursday night.
The Nuggets have lost four games in a row entering a home contest Friday against Boston. At 18-24, Denver ranks 11th in the Western Conference, seven games behind Phoenix for the final playoff spot.
