A Qatari company has brought innovation to the country. Al Sada Plastic Profiles, a company based in New Industrial Area, has introduced ‘Plastic Wood’ – a product which offers advantages of plastic and wood. One of the highlights is that the product boasts of ‘Made in Qatar’ tag as it is made from locally sourced raw materials.
“We make various sizes of plastic lumber which is not affected by sun and water and is bacteria proof. We are the only company in the region which is making product of this quality,” Ahmed Fawzy, Factory Manager of Al Sada Plastic Profiles told The Peninsula. Plastic lumber can be used in making shades, partitions and fences in open areas.
One of the main advantages of the product is that it is maintenance free for 10 years. Like other ordinary plastic, it does not crack under the sun and is also water proof. Like plastic, it is flexible and can be molded into any shape. “It is better than plastic and wood because it carries advantages of both. Wood is affected by water and sun both and needs to be repainted after a year,” he said. “If something is only made of plastic it will break under the sun. It does not crack under the sun because we have added anti cracking chemicals. Another advantage is that the colour stays for 10 years,” he added.
In terms of cost, it is in the middle of plastic and wood and in long term it fares better than wood. Buoyed by the increasing demand, the company is now planning to export it to neighbouring countries. “Now the demand for this Qatar is very good because companies are using it for setting up shades, partitions and fences, umbrella and other related items. Now we are looking to export in one or two months. We already have one customer from Oman,” he added. “It a locally made product and even the raw material I am sourcing from Qatar. Over 90 percent of the raw materials are sourced from Qatar,” he said.
The company took the help of a German company to make this product.
“The idea came to my mind after I saw some shades getting cracked and losing colour due to excessive heat under the sun. So I thought of creating a product which is not affected by sun and water,” he added.
The company at New Industrial Area has an area of of 6,600 square meters. “Our factory has three (production) lines but in future it can accommodate more than 10 lines to meet the export demand. The expansion will be for export market because just two line can take care of local demand,” he added.
