The Ministry of Municipality and Environment launched yesterday a health and occupational safety training programme for its employees. The programme aims to offer a safe environment for employees through training courses on how to deal with fire incidents, heatstroke, pesticides, and laboratories among others.
“The health and occupational safety programme came in order to raise the safety level among ministry’s workers from any threats of danger in their work,” Dr Mohammed bin Saif Al Kuwari, Director of the Municipal and Environmental and Municipal Studies Center at the ministry, said yesterday at a press conference held at the Ministry headquarters.
The programme is organized by The Environmental and Municipal Studies Center in collaboration with the Ministry of Interior.“The first training course started yesterday for about 125 employees from different municipalities, who will receive theoretical and practical courses on first aid,” said Al Kuwari.
Al Kuwari also added that “The programme attracts 5000 employees and workers. All the ministry’s employees and workers will be included in the programme and will receive the necessary training.”
“We have agreed with different authorities to provide training courses for employees on how to use fire extinguishers and to follow safety measures especially in places like stores and laboratories,” he added.  Providing such courses is aimed at protecting employees from exposure to occupational diseases and incidents like choking, bleeding, burns, heatstroke and poisoning, he said.
“The center will also offer awareness booklets about first aids which will be distributed to all employees,” Al Kuwari said. For his side, Mubarak Sultan Al Dawsari, Environmental Operations Department at the ministry said that “the programme aims to offer a number of procedures and measures in a way to protect ministry’s employees."
“Employees must know safety measures when they deal with electrical appliances, mechanical devices, and pesticides. In case they are entering work sites or laboratories they should know how to protect themselves,” he added.
