In a national campaign to reduce road accident injuries and trauma cases during COVID-19 pandemic, Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) has urged the public to take extra precautions.
Experts at Hamad Injury Prevention Program and HMC’s Hamad Trauma Center have said that less volume of trauma cases will reduce the burden on the health sector and help the national COVID-19 response.
Hamad Injury Prevention Program is the community outreach arm of HMC’s Hamad Trauma Center.
“Hamad Injury Prevention Program and Hamad Trauma Centre appeals to the public to enhance road safety and not to become victim of unnecessary injury and reduce the burden on our health sector as they respond to COVID-19,” said Dr. Rafael Consunji, Director of Hamad Injury Prevention Program, in a social media campaign.
A wide range of healthcare specialists in the country have been involved in care and protective equipment allocated for COVID-19 patients, trauma leaders are asking the public to help reduce number of trauma-related injuries.
“In order to reduce the load on the health sector and better protect front lines of the national COVID-19 response, Hamad Trauma Centre would like to appeal to the public to take precautions and reduce the number of traffic accidents,” said Dr Aisha Obeid, Assistant Director, Hamad Injury Prevention Program.
Dr. Talat Chughtai, Director, Trauma Intensive Care Unit(ICU)  at Hamad General Hospital, said, “If high number of trauma injuries are seen, more ventilators will be used; more ICU hospital beds will be filled; and more healthcare teams will be exposed to the risk of infection. If trauma cases reduce, more staff will be focused on the COVID-19 response.”
Dr. Sandro Rizoli, Medical Director of Hamad Trauma Centre, has said the ongoing national response against OCVID-19 has imposed a very high demand on the heath sector in Qatar.  “But we want to assure the public that the dedicated team of doctors and nurses of the Hamad Trauma Centre are ready and prepared to provide, world class care for victims of trauma,” he added.
The Hamad Trauma Center provides 24-hour availability of dedicated surgeons, physicians and other clinical staff with specialized training in trauma, acute care surgery and critical care medicine. This dedicated team play an essential role in implementing an integrated care plan that is thoughtfully designed to reduce disability and death from the disease of trauma.
