Doha: Doha Film Institute (DFI) co-financed films, Capharnaum and Of Fathers and Sons, a recipient of a DFI grant, have been nominated for Oscars.

The nominees were announced today in key categories for the 91st Academy Awards, which will be handed out on February 24 in Hollywood.

Much acclaimed Arabic movie Capharnaum from Lebanon, directed by Nadine Labaki and co-financed by DFI, is officially nominated for a Best Foreign Language Oscar this year.

The film, which retraces the journey of 12-year-old Zain, who decides to sue his parents for having brought him into this world when they clearly can’t give him the care he so desperately needs, had won the Best Film award at the sixth Ajyal Film Festival held last month in Doha.

The other films nominated in this category are Cold War from Poland, Never Look Away from Germany, Roma from Mexico and Shoplifters from Japan.

These two makes it the seventh Oscar nomination for DFI in the last five years. In 2015 Timbuktu received an Oscar nomination, while Theeb and Mustang made it in 2016 and The Salesman in 2017. In 2018 it was Loving Vincent.

It is a major accomplishment for Syrian cinema, Of Fathers and Sons, a recipient of a DFI grant, which scored an Oscar nomination for Best Documentary Feature.

This affecting and disturbing documentary, made by Talal Derki, German-based director of Syrian origin, demonstrates that jihadism is a learned behaviour – one that in some arenas is being handed down with paternal authority to vulnerable minds.

The other films nominated in this category are RBG, Free Solo, Hale County This Morning, This Evening and Minding the Gap.

DFI tweeted congratulating the films for securing nominations for the most prestigious film award in the world.
