Doha: Dr Hassan Al Derham, President, Qatar University said that there is a plan to open a Qatar University (QU) branch either in Al Wakra or in Al Shamal. Opening of new branches requires study and participation from concerned authorities. He added that many students from siege countries are continuing their studies in the university.
“Qatar university has an expansion plan and the plan includes opening a branch either in Al Wakra or Al Shamal, but it needs a study and participation from other authorities concerned like the Ministry of Municipality and Environment,” Al Derham said recently speaking to one of the local channels.
The university now has nine colleges and 79 programs of bachelor and master degrees and also planning to added a new college for media, he added.
Speaking to The Peninsula recently Dr Noureddine Miladi, Associated Professor in Media & Communication at Department of Mass Communication, said that “we provided comprehensive proposal to establish a college for media in 2016 and we are still waiting the university’s decision on this issue. Also we hope this year to open master’s degree in media,” Dr Miladi said.”
Al Derham also said that there are more than 300 to 400 researchers and 1,200 academic staff, adding that Qatar university has seen highest growth in the field of scientific research in the region.
The university has build a number of specialised research laboratories.
Regarding the situation of Gulf students from the siege countries, he said that they are still continuing their study and some of them who left the county came back when their countries allowed them to continue their study.
He also said that “some of the students have scholarships from the university and the university sympathised with them and provided all facilities to them to continue their studies. This is how we dealt with students of blockading countries unlike those countries which banned Qatari students from completing their studies”.
During the ongoing blockade, a number of academic staffs came forward and refuted allegations of the siege counties against Qatar.
