‘72% waste from Qatar 2022 venues segregated’

Doha: As much as 72 percent of waste generated at stadiums of FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 and other venues of associated activities have been segregated for recycling purposes.

“About 80,000 tonnes of waste was collected from venues of mega sporting event,” said Minister of Municipality H E Dr. Abdullah bin Abdulaziz bin Turki Al Subaie while speaking at an event organised by the Ministry of Municipality at Al Rayan Park yesterday.

The Minister honoured a number of employees and teams from different departments of the Ministry at the event for their outstanding performances and dedicated services in supporting the World Cup. 

The waste collected from the venues of the World Cup has been segregated into organic, plastic, metal, electronic and cardboard. The remaining waste is sent to the Ministry of Municipality’s Domestic Solid Waste Management Centre for further treatment in a waste-to-energy plant.

The initiative which was launched by the Ministry of Municipality with a zero waste to landfill goal is part of massive efforts of the State to deliver the most sustainable and carbon-neutral FIFA World Cup.

“The Waste Recycling and Treatment Department of the Ministry of Municipality contributed to the success of the World Cup by making a remarkable achievement in the field of waste sorting and recycling,” said the Minister of Municipality.

He said that 72 percent of waste, generated at stadiums of World Cup and other associated venues, has been sorted out for recycling purposes.

The Minister praised the efforts of the General Cleanliness Department and all municipalities in removing about 80,000 tonnes of waste from venues of the World Cup during the tournament. 

He said that the Department, following the action plan, deployed cleaning equipment, vehicles and containers to collect the waste from eight stadiums of World Cup and other venues of associated activities. He praised the efforts of all Ministry teams in supporting the World Cup activities, including the rehabilitation and development of 8 beaches, within the first phase of the project that include 18 beaches.

He said under the supervision of the Ministry maintenance and beautification works on the facades of many buildings were carried out. 

The Minister of Municipality touched on the fact that all Qatari cities have been awarded the title of Healthy City by the World Health Organization, as Qatar is the first in the Eastern Mediterranean Region to have all its cities obtain this title due to its great efforts in applying the foundations and standards of environmental, health and urban sustainability, which is one of the most important indexes of healthy cities.

He also praised the achievements of the Public Parks Department in the establishment of the Expo Doha 2023 pavilion at the fan zone in a garden under the slogan (Green Desert, Better Environment), the opening of the Panda House Park and several new parks, and decorating the main streets, parks and squares with flowers and landscapes.

The Minister added that recent years have witnessed a huge boom in the number of public parks, as their number increased to 148 parks in 2022, from only 56 parks in 2010, an increase of 164%.

He said that green spaces in the country increased to more than 43 million square meters in 2022, from about 2.5 million square meters in 2010.

The Minister said this was reflected in the per capita share of the green area, which rose to 16 square meters, after it was less than one square meter in 2010, with an increase of 16 times. He said the millionth tree was planted recently meeting the target of ‘Plant Million Tree’ initiative launched in 2019.
