The Ministry of Education and Higher Education has launched an initiative to provide academic guidance to the students from early stages.

“Starting from this year, we have started implementing an initiative about developing academic guidance programme for students of preparatory level,” said head of Academic and Career Guidance Section of the Educational Guidance Department, at the Ministry Ahmad Nasser Al Balam.

Speaking in a Qatar TV programme recently, Al Balam said that under the initiative, initially 10 schools have been selected for pilot study. More schools will be added later.

Speaking about the Student Guidance for University and Labor Market for 2020-21, which was issued by the Ministry in February, Al Balam said that the guidelines helped students select appropriate academic programme to pursue their higher studies.

“With growing number of universities and academic programmes, we launched the guidelines to provide students and parents with the information,” said Al Balam.

He said that the guideline contains details of different colleges and universities, available specialisations in the country, percentage required for taking admission in all universities, date of registration and other basics to help students select the programmes.

“The guideline also includes advisory to parents and guardians since they play key roles in guiding their children to selecting educational streams in schools and academic programmes in universities,” said Al Balam. He said that the guideline focused on the importance of standard tests which are required to take admission in the universities because all local and international universities required standard tests like IELTS, TOEFL, SAT or ACT. “The guideline helped students in preparing for the standard tests for admission in universities,” said Al Balam.

He said that the Ministry has been providing guidance to students of secondary schools from grade 10 to 12 from over a decade.

Speaking about government scholarship programme, Al Balam said: “Details of scholarship programme are available in the guideline so the students and parents can get it easily.”

He said that the guideline has been circulated to schools and soon it will be posted on the social networking sites of the Ministry of Education and Higher Education.

In February this year, Academic and Career Guidance Section of the Educational Guidance Department at the Ministry issued a guideline for students to prepare for the university stage and the job market for the academic year 2020/21.

The guideline aims at educating students and parents about various opportunities available to students after secondary school. The objective of the guideline is also to create awareness about the importance of early readiness for admission in suitable local and international universities.
