The Traffic authorities have scotched rumours circulating on social media suggesting that a new alphabet has been added to car number plates in Qatar. A video has been circulating on social media showing a Range Rover vehicle carrying the number plate beginning with letter Q.

The General Directorate of Traffic said on its Twitter account yesterday that there is no change in vehicle number plates in Qatar.

Clarifying on the Range Rover shown in the video, Brig Mohamed Saad Al Kharji, Director-General of the Traffic Department, said that it’s number plate has been specially designed for a TV shoot as part of a programme that will be aired soon.

“Anyone making changes in vehicle number plates without permission will face legal action and will be transferred to the law enforcing authorities,” warned the official.

Article 13 of the traffic law states that it is not permitted to make any change in the number plates, in colour, shape or contents, said the Directorate.
