Qatar to host 6th IOFS General Assembly in Oct

Doha: Qatar will host 6th General Assembly of the Islamic Organization for Food Security (IOFS) on October 2-3, 2023. 

The two day event, coinciding with the opening of International Horticultural Exhibition (Expo 2023 Doha) will have 250 participants from 56 countries.

The announcement was made in a press conference organised by the Ministry of Municipality yesterday.

The press conference was attended by Dr. Masoud Jarallah Al Marri, Director of Food Security Department at the ministry, who is also Chairman of IOFS Executive Council and Yerlan Baidaulet, IOFS Director-General. 

“Over 250 participants including Ministers of Agriculture and food security experts from 56 Islamic countries that are members of IOFS and over 25 international organisations specialised in food security will participate in the meetings of the General Assembly,” said Al Marri.

He said the meetings of the IOFS general assembly are considered a platform for exchanging and coordinating the joint efforts of Islamic countries in enhancing food security.

IOFS Director-General Yerlan Baidaulet announced that the IOFS will host its second high-level forum, which will be held from June 6 to 8, 2023, in Astana, Kazakhstan, under the chairmanship of Qatar.

He said the forum will be an opportunity to underscore IOFS’s commitment to assisting member states in ensuring sustainable food systems.

Baidaulet said the forum aims to create a unique, dynamic and unprecedented platform for multi-stakeholder dialogue, with a focus on sharing advanced agricultural technologies and advancing science and research to boost agricultural sector.

He said this is also to promote the concept of smart agriculture, transform food supplies and value chains, facilitate strategic partnerships for business opportunities and investments in agriculture, and empower youth for sustainable food systems.

Qatar, represented by the Ministry of Municipality, was elected as Chairman of the Executive Council at the 5th General Assembly of the IOFS on October 11, 2022.
