Doha: Qatar has taken advanced steps in the field of road safety and has given it great attention. The country has added remarkable achievements to its credit while implementing the strategy to lower road accident fatalities.
The number of traffic violations in Qatar fell significantly during December last year, showing an increase in road safety, according to the official data released by the Planning and Statistics Authority (PSA).
Total traffic violations declined by 61.2 percent to 76,160 violations in December 2022, compared to 196,185 in the same month of 2021. They also fell on monthly basis by 35.5 percent as in November of last year 118,117 violations were recorded.
The country has adopted various safety measures, because of which road traffic accidents have declined despite the rise in the registration of new vehicles.
Among the traffic violations, the highest fall was seen in the category of over speeding. When compared on a yearly basis when 145,226 cases of speed limit violations were registered in December 2021, only 27,818 violations were recorded in December 2022, a steep fall of 80.9 percent.
Whereas, on a month-on-month basis, 63,779 violations were reported in November 2022, a decline of 56.4 percent.
The violations of traffic signs stood at 2,443 in December 2022, registering a fall of 54.6 percent when compared to December 2021 year-on-year.
Similarly, in November 2022 it was 3,266, recording a decline of 25.2 percent month-on-month. The guidelines and alarm signal violations declined by 22.5 percent and 13.2 percent respectively on a yearly and monthly basis during the review period, revealed the data.
Total violations fell despite the increase in the number of new vehicles coming on the road. In the category of traffic movement violations, a decline of 14.6 percent and 8.8 percent were recorded on a year-on-year and month-on-month basis.
Out of the total traffic violations registered in December 2022, the speed limit violation (radar) accounted for 47 percent, while stand and wait rules and obligations violations stood at 31 percent and 22 percent in the others category.
Traffic accidents cases without counting the accidents without injuries, a total of 992 traffic cases were recorded during December 2022, showing a monthly increase of 14.5 percent and an annual increase of 18.4 percent. Light injuries accounted for most traffic accident cases during the same month, with 93 percent, followed by severe injuries at 5 percent.
According to the Ministry of Interior, new traffic radars have been installed to ensure traffic regulations in Qatar.
The radars have the ability to monitor drivers who are over speeding and using a mobile phone while driving. They also detect motorists who are not wearing seat belts.
The ministry said these traffic violations are monitored by radars installed on streets across the country. The ministry has reminded the public to adhere to traffic rules to ensure road safety and reduce accidents.
