DOHA: The National Program for Conservation and Energy Efficiency (Tarsheed) run by Qatar General Electricity and Water Corporation (Kahramaa) helped save QR5bn during the past six years.
Under the patronage of the Emir H H Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, the Prime Minister and Interior Minister, H E Sheikh Abdullah bin Nasser bin Khalifa Al Thani, opened the sixth anniversary of Tarsheed.
“Tarsheed program which was launched in 2012, succeeded in reducing the per capita consumption of electricity and water in Qatar by 17 percent and 18 percent respectively, reduce carbon emissions by 10.2 million tonnes, saving 265bn cubic feet of natural gas and around QR5bn by the end of 2017,” said the Minister of Energy and Industry, H E Dr. Mohammed bin Saleh Al Sada. The Minister was speaking at the sixth anniversary of Tarsheed initiative yesterday at Qatar National Convention Center under the slogan “Qatar is pulsing’’.
The Prime Minister and Interior Minister honoured the winners of Tarsheed competition organised by Kahramaa’s Conservation and Energy Efficiency department.
“Tarsheed will provide the technical support of a number of projects in the state to produce 500 – 700MW from renewable resources,” said Al Sada.
Regarding Tarsheed law and regulations, Al Sada said that regulation of second phase was issued to increase the efficiency rating of split unit of air conditioners from 9.5 to 11.5 adding that work is going to make it mandatory by the Ministry of Municipality and Environment.
He said that Kahramaa is implementing the Water Security Mega Reservoirs which aims at increasing the strategic water reserve of the country to 2.3 billion gallons by 2026. Kahramaa also announced the commencement of the second phase (2018- 2022) of the National Program for Conservation and Energy Efficiency (Tarsheed) and its new road map to achieve the objectives set as per Qatar National Development Strategy (2018 – 2022).
During these years, Tarsheed will strive to reduce the per capita consumption of electricity and water by 8 percent and 15 percent respectively and emissions by 7 percent, said Kahramaa’s President, Eng Essa bin Hilal Al Kuwari. Plans are afoot to upgrade the law and regulation regarding the specifications of electric appliances and water saving devices, said Al Kuwari adding that technical supports to be provided to the projects specially those related to renewable energy which will enable to reach the saving about QR6bn, cutting carbon emission to more than 13 million tonnes and gas about 319 million cubic feet.
He said that Kahramaa implemented several initiatives which helped reduce the consumption of utilities leading to cut the carbon emission and save the money. “We saved about QR2.2bn only in 2017 from conservation drive of electricity and water, said Al Kuwari. He said Kahramaa saved about QR560m by its initiative of better use of gas at its power plants The Water Security Mega Reservoirs project has started pumping about 1.3 million cubic feet water to ensure the water security in the country.
A film regarding the first phase of the National Program for the Conservation and Energy Efficiency was screened, highlighting its overall achievements, challenges, and future plans.
