Doha: Qatar is developing policies that can build a stronger and more sustainable food system, which is evident by its national food strategy.

The country prioritises food security projects by enhancing agriculture resilience to climate change and is committed to research, development, innovation and collaboration by addressing food security issues, said an official.

Speaking on the sidelines of AgriteQ 2023, Dr. Mohammad F Albeldawi, environment expert and engineering consultant at Ministry of Environment and Climate Change said, “Food security is a pressing global concern that countries need to address. The rapid population growth, industrial and urban development increase food generation demand, achieving integrated and sustainable food production is a necessity. Optimising food consumption and minimising food wastes are keys in food production.”

The official elaborated on the need to create a balance nexus to minimise environmental impacts, including waste generation which is possible by ensuring good understanding of water, energy, food nexus, developing governance policies and regulations, ensuring sustainable development, using advanced technologies and increasing energy efficiency, he said.

Speaking about current food security management status, Albeldawi noted that in the MENA region, Qatar is one of the countries which has a National Environment and Climate Change Strategy and the National Climate Change Action Plan with identified mitigation and adaptation projects. Qatar ranked first  in 2021 in the Arab world and 24th globally among 113 countries in using affordability, availability and quality and safety indices. The country is committed to research, development, innovation and collaboration to address food security issues.
