Doha: The Public Works Authority (Ashghal) will execute more than 100 roads and infrastructure development projects in 2018-19.

As many as 37 infrastructure development projects will be implemented in the existing and new subdivisions this year with a budget amount of around  QR13.6bn.

Eng Abdulla Al Attiyah, Assistant President of Ashghal, announced this while addressing the “Industry Briefing on Ashghal’s New and Existing Subdivisions’ Projects 2018-2019” which was held here yesterday.

He told the audience that in 2018, 90 percent of projects related to the 2022 World Cup would be completed.

“Despite the successes and achievements, we still have a lot of work to do ahead of us to achieve the desired excellence and achieve the country’s goals in providing infrastructure in the local residential areas, including road and drainage networks, cycle and pedestrian paths, and other beautification works, in addition to building projects and other vital projects,” Al Attiyah added.

He said in 2019, Ashghal was planning to start more than 18 projects to develop the infrastructure in the residential areas with a budget that will be announced early next year.

“To achieve these commitments, Ashghal is adopting best international practices and re-enforcing desired behaviours on site, which ensure minimising the impact of project implementation in residential areas. We have revised our contracts and supported it with a new KPI scheme.”

A number of companies related to the construction industry attended the event including contractors, suppliers, manufacturers and consultants in addition to individuals from governmental and non-governmental institutions who were interested in Ashghal’s plans for the next two years in respect of local roads and infrastructure projects.

Engr Saoud Ali Al Tamimi, Manager of Roads Projects Department, briefed the companies about the roads and infrastructure development projects to be carried out in 2018-19.

He said around QR18bn would be spent on those projects in 2019 including 5 R&I (roads and infrastructure) projects within new subdivisions, 13 R&I projects within existing subdivisions and 25 local road projects.

Al Tamimi said that in 2108; 758km length of roads would be developed, 27,588 plots would be served, 1319km length of GW/SW networks would be laid and 763km length of foul sewer networks would also be laid.

He said in 2018-19, 10 R&I projects within new subdivisions, 34 R&I projects within existing subdivisions, 57 road projects and 11 drainage projects would be completed.

Engineer Ahmad Ali Al Ansari, Ashghal’s Technical Office Manager, said that the procurement and contracting strategies have been reshaped and developed considering many aspects including better planning of the construction activities to minimise disruption to residents and Consistent implementation of site standards as well as the best practices for the right of way.

Also through reshaping the contracts, the importance of Zone and Sub-Zone Phased Delivery was taken into consideration. This includes concurrent zonal working but not in adjoining neighborhoods at the same time to minimise traffic disruptions.
