DOHA:   The 2nd Middle East Turbomachinery Symposium (METS 2) was opened at the Qatar National Convention Centre (QNCC) here yesterday.

The three-day event officially got under way with Said Mubarak Al Mohannadi, Director of Operations of QP, delivering the key note address on behalf of the Minister of Energy and Industry Dr Mohammed bin Saleh Al Sada, who is also the Chairman and Managing Director of Qatar Petroleum. Said Mubarak  also led the formal ribbon cutting ceremony to mark the opening of the exhibition.

The Turbomachinery Laboratory at Texas A&M University is organising the event with support from Qatar Petroleum, the host and titanium sponsor. The symposium’s other major sponsors include: ExxonMobil Qatar and RasGas Company Limited as platinum sponsors, Qatargas Operating Company Limited as the gold sponsor and Dolphin Energy Limited as the silver sponsor. METS debuted in Doha in February 2011 with over 1,000 attendees and 60 exhibiting companies. Following this successful launch, planning began for METS 2 with a goal of making the event even more successful.

Preliminary numbers for METS 2 attendance are exceeding those for METS 1, specifically in the exhibit hall with an increase in both companies and booths.  Official attendance numbers will be released after the conclusion of the symposium.

Bart P Cahir, ExxonMobil Qatar President and General Manager, as well as METS Advisory Committee Co-Chairs Abdulaziz Al Naimi, Joint Interest Manager at RasGas, and Dr Dara Childs, Director of the Turbomachinery Laboratory at Texas A&M University were among others who addressed yesterday’s event.

Plaques of appreciation were then presented to major sponsors.

The coming two days will witness world-class technical sessions and international networking opportunities in the exhibition hall.

Delegates can choose to attend and engage in a combination of 12 lectures, eight tutorials, eight discussion groups and 21 sessions of case studies, led by 133 accomplished authors from around the world.

Topics covered will include: Compressors, steam and gas turbines, expanders, pumps and drivers including motors, and auxiliary equipment such as couplings, bearings, gear boxes, dry gas seals, and annular seals.

The exhibition held alongside the symposium hosts booths from over 65 leading companies from the Middle East, North America, Asia, and Europe. Inside the exhibit hall, companies display full-size equipment, cutting-edge technology, and emerging industry trends.  Highly-qualified technical personnel are on hand to address business needs.
