Doha: The Dolphin Energy Doha Dash, a community event, which aims to encourage a healthy lifestyle and raise money for charity is likely to be an annual event of National Sport Day, an official of the Dolphin Energy Limited announced here yesterday.

“We are planning to establish the Dolphin Energy Doha Dash as an annual event, which grows in popularity year-on-year, and becomes the ‘go-to’ event for National Sport Day in Qatar,” said Adel Ahmed Albuainain, General Manager, Dolphin Energy, Qatar.

The first annual Dolphin Energy Doha Dash, in celebration of Qatar National Sports Day will be held on February 12 and is the first ever 5km run to beheld at Losail International Circuit.

The community event will feature a 5km run for participants aged twelve and over, a 3km run for all ages, a 1km run for children and a 1km ladies walk.

Albuainain said Dolphin Energy aims to introduce a successful and enjoyable mass participation running event to the city of Doha.

“We also want to highlight the importance of taking part in healthy activities; and having fun while doing so. The concept is already very popular across the Middle East; with notable events such as the Dubai Marathon, the Abu Dhabi Terry Fox Run, the Amman 10km and the Beirut Marathon bringing together thousands of participants every year. We want to give the same opportunity to the citizens and residents of Qatar,” added the company official in a statement yesterday.

Albuainain said Dolphin Energy is aiming to take the sports movement to new heights in Qatar.

“Sport, and a healthy lifestyle in general, is very important to everyone and we have a responsibility to our staff and stakeholders to encourage activities that promote this,” he said.

He added: “This is why it is an excellent initiative of the Heir Apparent H H Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad Al Thani. We believe National Sport Day is an excellent opportunity for everyone to do something active – it should not be thought of as a day off work, but a reason to do something that will benefit your health with, family and friends.”

“All of our senior management from the UAE and Qatar will be participating in the Dolphin Energy Doha Dash, along with several hundred members of our staff from here in Qatar. As one of the leading companies in Qatar, we want to lead the way and offer our staff, other companies and the general public a ready-made, fun event which they can use to celebrate National Sport Day,” said Albuainain.

The name of a local brand ambassador for the event will shortly be finalised, he said.

“We will be announcing an international athlete as a brand ambassador for the Dolphin Energy Doha Dash in the coming weeks. We are also in talks with the Qatar Association of Athletics Federation (QAAF) to work with a local brand ambassador,” disclosed Albuainain.

Albuainain said Dolphin Energy provides unlimited opportunities and support to encourage its employees who display a strong passion towards a certain sport.

“For instance, our talented jockey, Nayef Al Hajri won the “Thoroughbred Maiden Plate” trophy at The 16th Rowdas Al Fares Cup Day in 2012. He has won the top prize for three years,” he said.

Dolphin Energy have been sponsoring major sporting events including the Commercial Bank Qatar Masters Golf Tournament for five years from 2008 until last year in 2012.

The organisers have said that a  special Festival Village will be located in the pit garages at Losail Circuit during the Dolphin Energy Doha Dash.
