Heir Apparent urges Qatar’s sports chiefs to maintain sporting success

DOHA: The Heir Apparent  H H Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani has urged the sports federation’s chiefs to maintain the sporting  accomplishments, during the first meeting of the Qatar Olympic Committee’s (QOC) General Assembly of the 2012-2016 Olympic Session, yesterday.

In the meeting held at the QOC’s headquarters, H H Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, who is also the QOC  Chairman addressed the General Assembly members on their strenuous and tireless efforts. He also asked to invest in grassroots and pay special attention to the talented for continuing achieving success.

During the meeting, the Heir Apparent was unanimously elected to chair the QOC for the new Olympic session and preside over its executive office.   In turn Sheikh Saoud bin Ali Al Thani was also elected to be the deputy chairman of the QOC whereas Sheikh Saoud bin Abdulrahman Al Thani will continue his role as the Secretary General of QOC.

During the meeting, discussions of the Sport Sector’s Strategy (SSS) in the State of Qatar for the period (2013-2016), which is emanated from the National Development Strategy (2011-2016) were raised. 

Part of Qatar’s national vision 2030 is based on achieving the following three main goal - an increase in the community’s participation in sport, improving the integration of the sports general and specialised facilities, and increasing the process of the growth and management of those with sporting talents. 

In order to achieve those goals, five projects have been drawn out. 

These are: 1). Participation Survey project.

2). Qatar’s active campaign project.

3). Draft National Plan of sports and recreational facilities.

4). Sample project of building of path’s athletes.

5). Strategic management project of coaches and technical officials.

The meeting also involved a discussion of the tournaments the country will take take part in. 

These include the second Islamic Solidarity to be held in Indonesia in 2013, the 2013 Youth Asian Games in Nanjing, China, the 2014 Asian Games in 2014 and the second Youth Summer Olympic Games in Nanjing, China in 2014.

The Heir Apparent, also honoured Moutaz Essa Barshim and Nasser Saleh Al Attiyah for winning bronze medals for Qatar in the high jump and skeet events respectively at the Olympic Games. He handed them certificates and Olympic pins.
