DOHA: In three short weeks, the Qatar Men’s 3x3 basketball team will be one of the eighteen countries making their debut in the upcoming FIBA 3x3 World Championships in Moscow.
The championship will be played from June 5 to 8 2014.
As many as 48 teams from a total of 35 countries will come head to head at Luzhniki Park in Moscow.
The number of participating teams are double than the number of teams that competed at the debut FIBA 3x3 World Championship held in Greece in 2012.
The Qatari team will face host country Russia as well as Romania, Lithuania, Venezuela and Argentina in the pool stage during the event.
The ambitious Yasseen Masa is looking forward to leading his team at the second edition of the FIBA 3x3 World Championships, particularly after their victory at the 3x3 Asia Championships on home soil last year.
Following the World Championship, the Qatari squad can look forward to hosting the FIBA 3x3 All-Stars in Doha this December, a new competition which will feature six teams from around the world.
The Qatar Basketball Federation (QBF) signed a three-year-deal in September 2013 to host the competition which will bring the 3x3 season to a close in a one day event.
Sheikh Saoud bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, President of the Qatar Basketball Federation and Deputy Chairman for the FIBA 3x3 Commission said,
“I wish the Qatari squad the best of luck as they take on the world in Moscow and look forward to welcoming some of the best 3x3 players to Qatar later this year at the 3x3 All-Stars,” he said.
