Lawyer and Legal Adviser, Abdul Rahman
Doha: Members of Central Municipal Council (CMC) should be entrusted with more powers, said voters who came yesterday to polling stations to exercise the electoral rights. More powers will help these members to serve their constituencies by implementing development projects, they added.
“This is a big event in the democratic process. We have the right to be proud of these elections as Qatari men and women, and everyone who has the right to vote will not hesitate in exercising his electoral right,” Abdul Rahman, a lawyer, and a legal adviser, said while talking to The Peninsula.
The second thing which is important for this election is that to show others that the people are with the leadership for a better tomorrow, he said.
Regarding the limited power of the CMC, he said that “I hope that the government will give the CMC more powers and competencies so that voters can see the work of their representatives have done in their tenure.”
“Most of the work done by CMC members is because of their personal efforts because they only have power to submit recommendations and these recommendations do not carry any weight because they are merely advising. The CMC has completed around 20 years and has enough experience, so it can be entrusted with more powers,” Abdul Rahman emphasised. “ Those candidates will win in today’s election who have worked sincerely for their constituencies and lived up to the expectations of their voters,” he added.
He expressed hope that Shura Council members may also be elected in coming years.
Ali Abdullah Al Haddad
Qatari citizen Ali Abdullah Al Haddad, said that “The electoral process was easy and took place in a transparent democratic atmosphere. It took only a few minutes to choose my favourite candidate”.
“We hope that the candidates will work to develop their constituencies, in terms of infrastructure, schools, sports clubs and everything that serves the community,” he added.
Al Haddad gave advise to winning candidates to always remain in touch with people of their constituencies and should do not disappear until next election. He advocated increasing the power of CMC members.
Yousef Al Karani
Yousef Al Karani, a Qatari citizen who is very happy about this election said that “The elections took place in good conditions and with full transparency and we came today to show our confidence for our candidate.”
