Energy summit to debate MENA opportunities

DOHA: Qatar is set to host the 4th Annual Qatar Alternative Energy Investors Summit. The two-day event, scheduled to open on March 24, 2013, will highlight the MENA region’s current and future plans to develop alternative and renewable energy technologies. 

The conference, to be attended by energy experts and regional government representatives, is designed to assist regional governments in achieving their energy targets.

The opening day would be marked by a presentation on Qatar Environment and Energy Research Institute’s (QEERI) solar research initiatives. 

Dr Rabi Mohtar, Executive And Founding Director of QEERI, Dr Diego Martinez-Plaza, Principal Investigator for Solar Energy at QEERI and Dr Mohammed Darwish, Principal Investigator for Solar Desalination at QEERI will make presentations on various aspects of Qatar’s alternative energy initiatives.

An exclusive presentation on “Qatar’s ability to leverage 2022 opportunities”, will explore the investment opportunities in the alternative energy sector in the run up to the event. 

It will focus on the huge infrastructure development programme taking place in Qatar over the next 15 years-and its ambitious usage of renewable energy to power the event. 

A session on “GCC countries and renewable energy: What does the future hold?” will discuss the opportunities for Qatar and other GCC countries to enhance its future energy mix, conserve gas and reduce carbon emissions. The panel will debate on new opportunities for renewable energy types in the Middle east and what has to be done to promote them, including Geothermal, Wind, Tidal/hydro, Biomass.

Tobias Klaus, Head of Development Cooperation, International Solar Energy Research Center Konstanz; Daniel Calderon, Head of Origination and Asset Management, MASDAR, Dr Mahmoud El Garf, Chairman of Industrial Development Authority, Ministry of Foreign Trade and Industry, Egypt are among others to address various sessions on the second day of the meet.

A session dedicated to “Financing renewable energy Projects” will discuss the European experience with regards to financing renewable energy projects and facilitate a greater understanding of what works best.
