Qatar elected to UN Human Rights Council

Doha: Qatar has been elected as member of the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) with 182 votes for three years.

UN Department for General Assembly & Conference Management (DGACM), announced that 18 states including Qatar have been elected by Member States of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) to the UNHRC. “DGACM & Office of Legal Affairs staff ensured the smooth and procedurally correct conduct of the secret ballot vote,” it tweeted.

On the victory of Qatar in the election, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs H E Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani tweeted that it confirms Qatar’s continuous efforts to promote human rights.  

“The State of Qatar considers the preservation and protection of human rights as one of the strategic pillars of its foreign policy, and an essential factor for achieving prosperity and peace. Qatar’s victory today as a member of the Human Rights Council, with the support of 182 countries, confirms Qatar’s continuous efforts to promote human rights and culminates in its noble efforts in international issues,” the Deputy Prime Minister said.

Meanwhile, Permanent Representative of the State of Qatar to the United Nations H E Ambassador Sheikha Alya Ahmed bin Saif Al Thani said in a tweet: “Qatar’s victory today as a member of the United Nations Human Rights Council during the elections held at the General Assembly headquarters in New York with the support of 182 countries is an extension of the brilliant successes of Qatari diplomacy under the leadership of Amir H H Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani - may God protect him.”

Abdulla Shahid, President of the 76th session of the United Nations General Assembly, said: “It was wonderful presiding over the @UN_HRC elections today… balloting in the #UNGA is slowly getting back to its normal practice. Congratulations to Member States elected this morning!” 

Qatar Mission to UN tweeted: “As a newly elected member of the @UN_HRC for the term 2022-2024 with the support of 182 countries, the State of Qatar would like to take this opportunity to profoundly thank all Member States for their valuable support in Qatar’s candidacy during #HRCelections2021.”

In another tweet, Qatar Mission to UN said: “With the #HRCelections2021 concluding, we extend our sincerest congratulations to Benin, Gambia, Cameroon, Somalia, Eritrea, India, Kazakhstan,  Malaysia, United Arab Emirates, Lithuania, Montenegro, Paraguay, Argentina, Honduras, Finland, Luxembourg, and the United States on a successful election for the 2022-2024 term.” 

“The State of Qatar looks forward to working closely & constructively with the members of the council.” 

The Permanent Representative of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to UN, H E Abdallah Al Mouallimi, also congratulated H E Ambassador Sheikha Alya Ahmed bin Saif Al Thani and “brothers and sisters in Qatar Mission to UN” on Qatar’s election to the Human Rights Council for the period 2022-2024, read a tweet of KSA Mission to UN. 

Kuwait Mission to UN also congratulated Permanent Representative and members of Qatar Mission to UN on Qatar’s election to the Human Rights Council for the period 2022-2024.

The large number of Member States that voted in favour of the election of the State of Qatar for the fifth time since the establishment of the Human Rights Council in 2006, embodies the confidence of the international community in the active and positive role played by the State of Qatar in the field of protection and promotion of human rights and related issues. It also reflects the well-established approach and policy of the State of Qatar towards the promotion and protection of human rights at the local, regional and international levels, and the fulfilment of its obligations in this regard, QNA reported. 

The election of the State of Qatar comes in recognition of its wide record of initiatives to bring peace in the world and support mediation and dialogue between countries to resolve conflicts. The State of Qatar was elected on behalf of the group of Asian and Pacific countries.
