MME to provide first-aid training to employees

DOHA: The Ministry of Municipality and Environment, represented by the Municipal and Environmental Studies Center, has launched the second phase programme to provide occupational health and safety training to its employees to enable them to help their co-workers in proving first aid and tackle any emergency like situation at workplace.

The programme titled  “Risks, Crises, Emergencies, Disasters, Occupational and Environmental Health and Safety” will be implemented by the Ministry in cooperation with a number of stakeholders within and outside the ministry under the slogan “Safety Our Goal”.

The details about the programme were given by the Ministry officials at a press conference here yesterday.

“The programme which is a modern training course of international standard on health and safety aims at providing a complete training to an ordinary employee with no-medical background about how to give first aid to his colleague at work before ambulance service reached to the site,” Dr Mohammed Saif Al Kuwari, Director of the Municipal and Environmental Studies Center at the Ministry of Municipality and Environment told The Peninsula on the sidelines of the event.

He said that the employees will be also trained to protect themselves and their colleagues in case of any other emergency situations and natural disasters. He said that the high level experts will be involved to train the employees from a number of reputed institutions like  Hamad Medical Corporation’s Ambulance Service (HMCAS) Ras Laffan Emergency and Safety College, a leading fire and emergency training provider and Qatar Red Resent Society (QRCS).

“About 500 employees were targeted to impart training under phase one of the programme and second phase targets about equal number of trainees but we have big plan under which 8,000 employees will receive the training during next five years,” said Al Kuwari.

He said that the Ministry has about 6,000 employees who will undergo the training courses.

The female employees of the Ministry will also receive the training courses.

“Separate training courses were designed for female employees so they could provide first aid to their female co-workers to protect their privacy,” said Al Kuwari.

The program aims to maintain the health of the employee from the risk of injury within the rules of occupational health and safety, in accordance with the legislation of the State of Qatar in this area, the municipalities’ need and departments of the ministry in terms of developing integrated perceptions of all risks and preparedness with the best means and technical and specialised training programs.

The implementation of such important programs reflects the real role of the Ministry and its impact on the local community on prevention, risk management and reduction and how to act during disasters through the use of specialists and the acquisition of the necessary expertise in this area of knowledge and science and recommendations are important and useful.
