The General Endowment Department at the Ministry of Awqaf and Islamic Affairs provided financial support to 20 needy patients for organ transplantation at Hamad General Hospital (HGH) in 2022.

“As many as 12,940 kidney dialysis sessions were held at the HGH under healthcare project of endowment fund for poor patients last year,” said Director of General Endowment Department, Dr. Sheikh Khalid bin Mohammed bin Ghanem Al Thani. He said that 49 heart patients received financial support for their treatments.

Dr. Sheikh Khalid was speaking at a press conference organised by General Endowment Department at its headquarters for demonstrating the achievements of endowment fund in 2022.

“Sixty four mosques and homes for imams were built under the endowment fund for mosque services during the period of study. A total of 173 mosques and homes for imams are under-construction,” said Dr. Sheikh Khalid. He said 23 makeshift mosques were provided and 11 such mosques are under construction.

“The General Endowment Department established 134 centres for learning holy Quran including 112 centres for boys and 22 centres for girls from the fund for serving holy Quran and prophetic traditions.”

He said 2,572 students benefited from Ta’ahed platform for distance learning of holy Quran and the summer course, and 3,637 students participated in ‘Muhaddis Al Saghir’ competition for prophetic traditions.

“A total of 4,329 poor families in Qatar received food baskets from the endowment fund for ‘righteousness and piety’. As many as 4,132 people benefited from meals provided by Hifz Al Naema Center.”

He said the endowment fund project for education and culture development expanded significantly. Under the project, the Center for Endowment Studies was opened.

“It provided 14 scholarships at Oxford University, in addition to 125 university scholarships inside Qatar, and 40 scholarships for postgraduate studies,” said Dr. Sheikh Khalid.

He said the education project sponsored 21 students with disabilities, 959 students from 17 nationalities at Assalam School. He said 184 students from 35 nationalities received scholarships at Religious Institute under the project.

“Under Endowment Fund for Family and Childhood, 146 Qatari families and 64 expatriate families were sponsored. The programme for those intending to marry benefited 234 young people. A ‘community markets’ project provided 28 outlets to Qatari families for marketing their products,” said Dr. Sheikh Khalid.

He said all achievement are the results of joint efforts that start with the initiative by donors for the welfare of the people, then the institutional work carried out by the General Endowment Department to develop the endowment and spend it according to the conditions of donors, then community partnerships with the governmental and private sectors.

“Through these generous initiatives and community partnerships, the endowment has an effective role in the various sectors of society and a tangible impact, whether in the Islamic affairs sector such as the Qur’an, Sunnah, mosques, as well as the scientific and cultural development sectors, the family, childhood and health care,” said Dr. Sheikh Khalid.
