Shooting: Akajov wins gold medal in 50m category

DOHA: Olk Akajov won gold medal in the 50m shooting category at the Heir Apparent  Cup, held at Losail Shooting Complex yesterday.

Aziz Mohammed and Mayed Hamad Al Ahbabi clinched silver and bronze medals after finishing second and third places respectively.

Speaking of his victory at the event, Akajov said the competition field was very strong.

He said: “The competition was very strong. However, I won the first gold medal in this competition which is a very good indicator  for me.”

The shooter admits he wants to be on the podium again.

“I want to be continusely on the podium winning medals in this shooting sport. I hope that this can contribute in raising Qatar’s profile in the medal achievements,” he added.

He added: “We still have more chances to win more medals and will face difficult challenges.”

Meanwhile, in the youth event, Osama Al Sheba finished first, who beat Mohammed Al Muzaffar and Omar Al Sadi.

Championship Director, Ibrahim Al Mohamandi said he was thrilled with the achievement of Al Sheba.

He said: “I am happy of his (Al Sheba) achievements. Despite the amendments of the law, Qatar’s expectations are good for this competition.”

Local competitors will be seen in action in many categories including Recurve 50m, 30m, 60m and 90m.

The event is organised by the Qatar Shooting and Archery Federation. THE PENINSULA
