Dr Hanan Al Fayadh, Hartmut Fähndrich, Sohaib Saeed, Isabella Camera Dafflito
The winners of fourth edition of ‘Sheikh Hamad Award for Translation and International Understanding’ (SHATIU) for 2018 worth $2m were named and honoured in a ceremony held at The Ritz-Carlton, Doha recently.
Under the category of translation into Arabic from German, first prize went to Ibrahīm Abū Hashhash for the translation of Die Philosophie der Aufklärung by Ernst Cassirer.
Hasan Muhammad Saqr received second prize for the translation of Die rationalen un soziologischen Grundlagen der Musik by Max Weber.
Faris Yūwākīm bagged second prize bis for the translation of Castellio gegen Calvin oder Ein Gewissen gegen die Gewalt by Stefan Zweig. Third prize went to Samīr Gries for the translation of Leben by David Wagner.
Alī Misbāh received third prize bis for the translation of Menschliches Allzumenschliches by Friedrich Wilhelm Nietzsche.Third prize bis went to Nabīl Haffār for the translation of Qatna by Maria Courant.
Under the category of translation from Arabic into German, first prize went to Stefan Weidner for the translation of Turjumān Al ashwāq by Ibn `Arabī. Berenike Metzler bagged first prize bis for the translation of Fahm Al Quran by Al Muhāsibī
Under the category of translation into Arabic from English, first prize went to Usāmah Muhammad Shafī` Al Sayyid for the translation of The Oxford Handbook of Islamic Theology edited by Sabine Schmidtke.
Kayān Ahmad Hāzim received first prize bis for the translation of An Introduction to Islamic Law by Wael B. Hallaq.
Īhāb `Abd Al Rahīm `Alī bagged third prize for the translation of The Revenge of Geography by Robert D Kaplan.
Under the category of translation from Arabic into English, first prize went to Nawal Nasrallah for the translation of Treasure Trove of Benefits and Variety at the Table by an anonymous author. Nancy Roberts got first prize bis for the translation of Gaza Weddings by Ibrahim Nasrallah. Third prize went to Sohaib Saeed for the translation of the first volume of The Great Exegesis by Fakhr Al Dīn Al Rāzī
The prize under the category of achievement to Hartmut Fähndrich; and Mohammed Bin Hamad Al Thani Center for Muslim Contribution to Civilization. Saed Rahman Slimanov received the prize of the category of Translation and Dictionaries Studies.
The winners of the prizes under the category of Achievement Awards in other Languages are Nutahara Noboaki; Asad Durakovic; Mahmut Karalic; Isabella Camera D’afflito; Tahsīn Razzāq `Azīz; `Adnān Jāmūs and Fu’ād Al Mir`ī. Mu`āwiah `Abd Al Majīd bagged the Translation Encouragement Award.
“The winners of SHATIU-2018 were selected from 203 entries submitted from 31 countries,” Dr Hanan Al Fayadh, the Award’s Media Consultant told The Peninsula on the sidelines of the ceremony.
She said that the participants hailed from Iraq, Kuwait, Oman, Yemen, Syria, Lebanon, Jordan, Palestine, Egypt, Sudan, Libya, Tunisia, Algeria, Morocco, Japan, Russia, Albania, Kosovo, Bosnia, Montenegro, Germany, Switzerland, Austria, Italy, UK, US, Canada, Australia, South Africa and Tanzania.
“The Award aims at honouring translators and acknowledges their role in strengthening the bonds of friendship and cooperation among people and nations of the world,” said Al Fayadh adding that the Award also encourages creativity, upholds the highest moral and ethical standards, and spreads the values of diversity, pluralism and openness. She said that the prize value of each category is $200,000 of total prizes of the Award are worth $2m so the winner of first prize will receive $100,000 and second and third prize winners will get $60,000 and $40,000 respectively.
The winners lauded the Award describing it a great initiative to encourage the work of the translation which help people to know each other worldwide.
“I received third prize in the category of Arabic into English translation for the translation of the first volume of The Great Exegesis, Quran commentary by Fakhr al-Dīn al-Rāzī,” said Sohaib Saeed.
He said that It is wonderful opportunity to be recognize for the work. “I tried to convey the meaning of the important part of Islamic and Arabic culture into English which I understood that very much needed I am very honoured to do so,” said Saeed.
Lauding the Award he said that the way the award was set up is very clearly supporting the role of the translators what they bring to the civilization and modern life. “This award is made us feel that the work is valued and there is worth continuing,” said Saeed.
I received life time achievement award for translating and having translated the contemporary Arabic literature for more than 35 years, said Hartmut Fähndrich, a German laureate residing in Switzerland.
He said that he get published more than 60 novels and collection of stories from Arabic into German. “The award is a pleasure and honour which means someone realize that you achieved something. I am honoured by Arab part to provide literary information to Europe from Arab,” he added. He appreciated the initiative of the award which according to him helped encourage foreigners not only Arabs to translate into Arabic and from Arabic into other languages.
“I translated many famous books from Arabic into Italian”, said Isabella Camera D’afflito who bagged the prize under the category of Achievement Awards in other Languages. She said that the award is playing great role in encouraging the translators by recognising their hard-works.
