DOHA: The National Committee for International Humanitarian Law of the Ministry of Justice yesterday launched ‘Qatari Lecturer’ programme in the field of international humanitarian law.
The programme aims to prepare Qatari lecturers and experts in the field of international humanitarian law. The training course has been launched in collaboration with International Committee of the Red Cross and Al Jazeera Media Institute.
The two weeks programme, which currently includes 65 Qataris, has two parts; legal side focusing on important aspects of international humanitarian law and the second one is on grooming speaking, presentation skills, etc.
On behalf of the President of the National Committee for International Humanitarian Law, Sultan bin Abdullah Al Suwaidi; Brigadier Abdullah Saqr Al Muhannadi, Vice-President of the Committee said that the programme is the first of its kind organised by the Committee to enhance the skills of Qatari youth in international humanitarian law.
The programme contributes to the formation of a group of lecturers who may become experts in this branch of law. The Committee will use trained youth in the future to promote international humanitarian law.
He pointed out that this programme comes at a time when the world is witnessing multiple armed conflicts, especially in the Arab world, which is suffering from occupations in some parts and armed conflicts in others that has led to countless deaths and injuries.
He further said: “The International Committee of the Red Cross having a history of 100 years has fifty years experience in humanitarian work in times of armed conflicts, whether international or regional.”
The Head of the Regional Mission of ICRC in the GCC, Yahya Alibi, praised the State of Qatar’s commitment and efforts to promote international humanitarian law at the national level through National Committee for International Humanitarian Law or through its external humanitarian activities.
“The establishment of a National Committee of International Humanitarian Law in any country was a very important point, which contributed to the proper implementation of international humanitarian law at the national level and its proper implementation,” he said.
He referred to the increasing number of national committees of international humanitarian law and their positive role of spreading international law.
The two-week training course which began yesterday, is a practical translation of the terms of the Memorandum of Understanding between the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and the National Committee for International Humanitarian Law.
