MME educates public on environment, air quality

Doha: The Ministry of Municipality and Environment (MME) organised a programme at Mall of Qatar  (MoQ) yesterday to create awareness among visitors about protecting environment to mark the Wold Environment Day (WED) which falls on June 5.

The WED of this year was marked worldwide under a campaign on fighting air pollution. Large number of visitors, including children and women, attended the programme, which included stage shows on environment and air quality. 

Children participated in drawing and colouring contests on issues of environment to educate them about the importance of environment from childhood. MME took a number of measures including strict monitoring on industries and establishing stations to check air quality in the country.

So far, 18 stations are established with advanced equipment for monitoring air quality, the Ministry said in a statement. The Ministry is working on a plan to set up a national network for monitoring air quality. Under the plan, a total of 26 stations will be set up across the country to serve the purpose.

The Department of Industrial Inspection and Combating Pollution at the Ministry caught a violation of environment at a company last month. The action was taken during an inspection campaign launched by the department at a number of industries to catch environment related violations. The services of erring company was suspended until it rectify the situation by removing the violation.

The Assistant Under-Secretary for Environment Affairs at MME, Eng Ahmad Mohamad Al Sada, said in statement that the Ministry gave top priority to check the air pollution in the country so as to ensure the sustainability and environment protection.

He said that the Ministry is working to review and evaluate the environmental status of development projects to ensure that they follow best environmental practices. They are monitored regularly to ensure environmental standards. 

He said that the Ministry has established a network for air quality monitoring stations in the country in collaboration with authorities concerned using advanced technologies to follow up the effects of air pollution causing climate change and work to reduce it in accordance with the international conventions on climate change ratified by State, most recently the Paris Agreement. 

The Assistant Under-Secretary for Environment Affairs called people and institutions to participate in the efforts of the Ministry to maintain air quality and address climate change by establishing sustainability standards reducing pollutant emissions of air, rationalising energy consumption in all its forms to preserve environment.
