The 2019 Qatar Process Safety Symposium (QPSS) kicked off at the InterContinental Doha Hotel yesterday with a signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Texas A&M University at Qatar, ConocoPhillips Qatar, and Qatargas.
The MoU, which was signed by Dr Cesar Malave, Dean at Texas A&M University at Qatar, Todd Creeger, President at ConocoPhillips Qatar, and Khalid Al Hemaidi, Chief Operating Officer for Health, Safety, Environment & Quality at Qatargas, officiated the collaboration of the three organizations in hosting the annual symposium.
Since the symposium was launched in 2010, Texas A&M at Qatar’s branch and the Mary Kay O’Connor Process Safety Center has been working to promote process safety in Qatar and organize the QPSS together with ConocoPhillips.
Talking about the new partnership, Qatargas Chief Executive Officer Khalid bin Khalifa Al Thani said, “We are honored to become part of the annual delivery of QPSS, which has grown into an important event for Qatar’s human capital development. Our partners are globally-distinguished institutions in their respective fields of energy and academia. While there is no one-size-fits-all solution, we can jointly implement superior control processes to mitigate the adverse effects of human error in the future”.
In his welcoming remarks, Malave also said, “At Texas A&M at Qatar, we prepare the next generation of leaders with not only a high competency in engineering but an overall capacity to enter the workforce with a strong sense of hazard awareness and process safety culture. Establishing a dialogue between business and academia is a substantial part of our efforts. And QPSS is a homegrown endeavor, engineered within Qatar, for Qatar, to have a positive impact on the wider international community. As such, the involvement of strong national institutions such as Qatargas propel the scope of QPSS forward. Going forward, the Qatar Process Safety Symposium, and therefore all industry in Qatar, the region and even worldwide, can only benefit from this new alliance, which will further advance Qatar’s socio-economic progress and help to implement world-class safety standards across all local industries”.
