Doha: The first installation of decorative lighting poles to enhance Doha Corniche will begin in the middle of this year, said Ahmad Al Abdulla, CEO of the Lighting Design Company.
“Most of the lighting poles to be installed by the middle of this year will be in area of the National Day celebration,” he said appreciating the great support and cooperation that private companies have received from the government.
Speaking to Qatar Radio yesterday, Al Abdulla noted that the work will be completed by February next year.
The Public Works Authority (Ashghal) recently signed two contracts to provide 2,600 decorative lighting poles to enhance Doha Corniche and Central Doha areas, within the works of the Supervisory Committee of Beautification of Roads and Public Places in Qatar.
Al Abdulla further said that the new lighting poles are designed in the form of palm frond and leaves shaped lighting poles in order to enrich the Qatari identity and also to save 60 percent energy compared to the electric poles that are currently used.
“The idea and implementation is by Qatari cadres and institutions according to international standards. The goal is to beautify our country with local products while formerly foreign companies were executing such projects,” he said.
Replying to a question about more focus on Doha Corniche compared to other streets, Al Abdulla said that it was because Doha Corniche is a main road of the state and due its strategic location at the waterfront connecting eastern coastal regions.
It is to be noted that two local companies have been contracted to supply 2,600 locally manufactured lighting poles to provide LED lighting extended along 10km on Doha Corniche from Ras Bu Abboud Bridge to Doha Cityscape Area and along another two square kilometres around Central Doha.
