Doha, Qatar: Head coach Hussein Ammouta wants Jordan to be fully focused when they open their AFC Asian Cup Qatar 2023 Group E campaign against Malaysia at the Al Janoub Stadium today.
Ammouta, who led Morocco to the 2020 African Nations Championship title, believes that Malaysia have improved since their last encounter in 2021.
“The opening match is always crucial for all teams, and we are expecting a tough encounter tomorrow. Our primary focus is on a solid defence to secure the three points. We are fully aware that the match won’t be easy, so maintaining total concentration is key,” said Ammouta.
“Every team is formidable and while history plays a role, Malaysia have evolved with exceptional players. We expect a strong and challenging match, and our approach will be offensive. Acknowledging that each team has its strengths, we don’t underestimate any opponent.
“We approach the match with seriousness and focus, without assuming superiority. Our primary objective is to secure three points and kick off the tournament with a positive start.”
Jordan had mixed results in their build-up, starting with a hard-fought 2-1 win over Qatar, before going down 6-1 against four-time champions Japan but Ammouta is confident his team is well prepared.
“In the friendly matches, especially the first two against the Olympic team and the Lebanese team, we experimented with players who weren’t actively participating with their clubs. Our emphasis was on formation. However, despite facing challenges against Qatar and Japan, the team has regained its focus.
“We provide clear instructions to the players, emphasising minimal mistakes in the build-up. We appeal to our fans for full support and we assure them that we will give our best effort.”
For Kim Pang-gon, facing Jordan in their opening Group E tie provides the perfect opportunity for Malaysia to prove a point.
“I’m very excited for this tournament, our team is fully ready for Jordan. We can introduce our dynamic and agile football,” said the Malaysian head coach.
“Three weeks of preparation, including a camp in Doha, posed some obstacles but we overcame them. Despite some injured players, we have a strong team ready for tomorrow’s game.”
“We have devised a game plan for Jordan and our players are highly confident. Despite our past performances against them, this tournament presents a new challenge and we are prepared to face it.
“We aspire to create history by defeating Jordan, recognising that Korea Republic are considered the favourites. Nevertheless, we are determined to strongly challenge for a spot in the Round of 16.”
“We boast a good record with the highest winning rate, especially evident in the positive results from the last FIFA window in March and we held Syria to a 2-2 draw in our recent friendly.
“With a ranking above 90, we’ve played six games, securing two wins and two draws. This record has instilled confidence that we can compete at a high level.” AFC
