Doha: The nationwide campaign to remove abandoned vehicles which was launched in July this year reached Al Sheehaniya Municipality yesterday, the campaign's final destination.
Over 5,300 abandoned vehicles have been removed under the campaign, launched by the Joint Committee for Removing Abandoned Vehicles of the Ministry of Municipality and Environment (MME), since July.
However, over 9,300 abandoned vehicles have been removed since January this year. The annual campaign will conclude in Al Sheehaniya Municipality.
Speaking on the occasion yesterday, Assistant Director of MME's Mechanical Equipment Department, Marzouq Al Mesaifiri said the campaign will be relaunched next year with new strategies after assessment of 2020 campaigns.
Head of Monitoring Section of Al Sheehaniya Municipality, Ali Mohamad Al Hammadi, said that over 150 abandoned vehicles had been marked to be picked up from various places across the Municipality.
Deputy Director of the Cleanliness Department, and a member of the Joint Committee, Mohamad Faraj Al Kubaisi, said the campaign in Al Sheehaniya Municipality will last a week.
He said the committee has intensified inspection efforts, urging owners to not abandon their vehicles at public places, and residential and industrial areas. Personnel from the Internal Security Force (Lekhwiya) are also taking part in the campaign.
Head of the General Monitoring Section at Doha Municipality, Hamad Sultan Al Shahwani, thanked the owners who removed their abandoned vehicles during the given period. Head of General Monitoring Section at Al Sheehaniya Municipality said the municipal inspectors will continue marking the abandoned vehicles round the year to curb the phenomena of abandoned vehicles.
The Joint Committee, since its establishment in 2013, has removed over 81,000 abandoned vehicles from all over the country. About 44,000 vehicles were disposed of during this period.
