Doha: The Qatar 2015 Organising Committee will host a special “Open House” for Qatari nationals interested in volunteering for the 24th Men’s Handball World Championship, which will take place in January 2015.
With thousands of fans and guests set to attend the sporting mega-event, the championship will offer exciting opportunities for volunteers to take part in a number of roles, ranging from spectator services through to media and broadcasting.
A number of Qataris have already participated in events with the Qatar 2015 Organising Committee — such as the IHF Super Globe Championship in September — and found the experience extremely rewarding.
The Open House will take place this Wednesday and Thursday at the Qatar 2015 Volunteers Centre, located at the Qatar Sports Club in Doha. Trained team-members will be on-hand to assess candidates and answer any questions they might have.
Thousands of people from across Qatar’s diverse population have registered to support the championship but the Organising Committee is making particular efforts to encourage Qatari nationals to take part, since the championship will enable volunteers to be part of a major effort to showcase Qatar’s culture, hospitality and sense of sporting spirit.
Dr Thani Abdulrahman Al Kuwari, Director General of Qatar 2015, said: “Qatar 2015 will be one of the biggest and most important events in Olympic sport and will offer significant opportunities for everyone who takes part. People who volunteer will gain valuable life skills and have the chance to see how a global sporting event is organised and delivered to the highest standard.”
“Volunteers will also be proud of the fact that they contributed to a chapter in Qatar’s sporting history. For these reasons, we are prioritising attracting volunteers from among the people of Qatar and we encourage everyone to take part,” he added.
Volunteers who supported the IHF Super Globe in September agree that big events offer incredible opportunities. “I volunteer to support my country and to show the world and our international guests our Qatari hospitality,” said Qatar national volunteer Salem Al Naimi.
Qatar 2015 is providing dedicated support for volunteers with special needs or physical disabilities, to ensure access for all at the championship.
People who attend the Open House should bring their Qatari ID for registration and people who are under 18 years of age should come with a parent or legal guardian.
The Open House is the latest in a series of outreach activities conducted by Qatar 2015, which is also organising a schools and universities programme in the coming weeks to engage more young people with the event.
The 2015 Organising Committee also encourages volunteers from across Qatar’s communities to apply as it looks to select a final team of 1,500 volunteers from Qatar and the wider region to participate in the 24th Men’s Handball
World Championship in January 2015.
Recruitment events and announcements for volunteers have been taking place over the summer and will continue until the end of October.
