Doha: Qatar is a very important market for Chinese technology giant Huawei. Terming Qatar as a very advanced Information and Communications Technology (ICT) market, a senior Huawei official said the company aims to capture opportunities in 5G application to drive digital transformation in the country.
“Qatar is a very important market for Huawei in the Middle East region and it is also a very advanced market in terms of ICT. I think a very important opportunity for Huawei in Qatar market is how to seize the capabilities and the opportunities from 5G to be applied in the B2B (Business to Business) area to drive industry digital transformation,” Karl Song, VP of Global Communications, Huawei told The Peninsula. “On that front, we can work with telecom operators. We can also work with customers in vertical sectors like transportation, finance, and energy to achieve together digital transformation, reduce carbon emissions and energy consumption,” he added.
The technology major also aims to play a positive role in successful hosting of FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 which is scheduled to take place from November 21 to December 18 this year. The company has accumulated experience from Beijing Winter Olympics which can be used to support the football world cup.
“Also, as we know, a very important event is going to be held in Qatar in the second half of this year, the World Cup. Huawei has lots of successful experience in providing network assurance services during these kind of critical events,” said Song.
“So we will work closely with the telecom company to support telecommunication services during the games and support services like a high definition video broadcasting, high quality Wi-Fi for the arena so that the audience on site and online around the world can enjoy the best experience,” he added.
He said that in the Beijing Winter Olympics game, Huawei provided network assurance services and support to the television broadcasting in high definition. “So we have accumulated even more experience that can be used and shared to support the Qatar World Cup,” he added.
Huawei has increased its presence in Qatar and taken initiatives to develop digital talent in the country. Last month, Huawei opened a Huawei ICT Academy Lab at the Community College of Qatar (CCQ) in an effort to strengthen Qatar’s digital talent ecosystem while deepening Huawei’s efforts to nurture a rich ICT talent pool, in line with national objectives.
The ICT Academy Lab will train individuals in a real-world environment using Huawei equipment before graduating with high-level Huawei Certifications. It will also support CCQ’s research programs by providing cutting-edge technology and platforms and inspire innovations by conducting industry and university collaborative projects and research. Huawei ICT Academy Lab is the latest initiative by Huawei to develop digital talent in Qatar. The Huawei ICT Academy has signed cooperation programs with various universities to supply a high-quality workforce for the sector’s development.
Huawei’s flagship CSR program, Seeds for the Future, celebrated another successful season in 2021, with students from three universities, including CCQ, graduating with ICT and cultural trainings in cutting-edge technology such as 5G, cloud computing, artificial intelligence, and Internet of Things (IoT).
