US is in talks with Iran officials who have assured of sailors' safety

Washington: Iran detained ten US sailors aboard two small US Navy boats on Tuesday.

The US is communicating with Iranian officials, who gave assurances of the sailors' safety, a US military official told (USA TODAY), adding "We have received assurances the sailors will promptly be allowed to continue their journey."

US Secretary of State John Kerry spoke to his Iranian counterpart, Foreign Minister Mohammed Javad Zarif, who promised the two ships would be allowed to continue their voyage, likely at dawn Wednesday local time, according to a senior US official.

White House Deputy National Security Adviser Ben Rhodes said the administration was aware of the incident. "We are working to resolve the situation such that obviously the US personnel are returned to their normal deployment."
