DOHA: The Ministry of Municipality and Environment represented by Wildlife and Protection Department deployed especial patrolling teams at beaches to protect sea turtles during nesting and hatching season.
“The beaches with potential nesting of sea turtles like Al Huwaila, Al Jasasiya, Al Marona, Al Ghariya and Al Mafeer were kept under the monitoring during the season,” said Omar Salem Al Nuaimi, Director of Wildlife and Protection Department at the Ministry.
Al Nuaimi was speaking to The Peninsula on the sidelines of a ceremony held yesterday to honour the members of a working team in recognition of their efforts for successfully implementing a project of protecting hawks-bill, an endangered sea turtle at Al Fuairit beach during nesting season from April to July 2018. “Under the project a total of 5,010 baby turtles were released by the end of a four month long nesting season,” said Al Nuaimi adding that the Department recorded 81 turtle nestings in this season.
Al Nuaimi stressed that the Ministry of Municipality and Environment has attached great importance to the projects that support the conservation of biodiversity, especially those protecting endangered species like sea turtle.
He said that protecting hawks-bill turtle is one of the wildlife projects of the Department of Protection and Wildlife.
Speaking about the projects of the Ministry to protect the environment, Al Nuaimi said: “Many plots of green-lands (locally known as ‘Rawd’) with trees are being fenced to protect the wild plants and trees.” He said over six plots of green-lands with big number of Ghaf trees (prosopis cineraria) were fenced recently to protect them from harmful elements.
Addressing to the honouring ceremony, Omar Salem Al Nuaimi, Director of Wildlife and Protection Department thanked Qatar University, represented by the Center for Environmental Sciences, Al Jaber Engineering Company, the Department of Public Relations and Communication, Al Shamal Municipality, General Cleanliness Department, Management of Administrative Services, Mechanical Equipment Management and Information Systems Management for their support and participation in successful implementation of the project.
“The credit for the success of the project goes to the collective efforts made by departments concerned at the Ministry of Municipality and the environment and relevant stockholders of the project,” said Al Nuaimi adding that the team is expecting more achievements during next season.
