DOHA: Giving top priority to the health and safety of workers, the Ministry of Administrative Development, Labor and Social Affairs has announced the Second Occupational Safety and Health Conference in collaboration with Hawkama Center on April 28.
The conference aims at promoting the understanding about the health and safety of workers at workplace in Qatar, said Head of International Labor Relations Department at the Ministry of Administrative Development, Labour and Social Affairs Faisal Al Shuaibi at a press conference here yesterday.
He said the conference will be held under the theme of ‘Safety and Health of Workers First’, on the occasion of World Day for Safety and Health at Work (SafeDay) adding that the occupational safety and health awards will be distributed during the conference to companies who have good performance on this matter.
Al Shuaibi said that many international organizations and entities will participate in the conference, starting with the ILO, Building and Wood Workers’ International (BWI) as well as other organizations specialized in occupational safety and health.
In addition, speakers from Qatar and outside will participate in the sessions, Al Shuaibi added. Speaking to The Peninsula, Al Shuaibi said that local companies are complying with the occupational safety and heath rules.
He also appreciated the role of major companies and institutions like Supreme Committee for Delivery and Legacy, Qatar Foundation, Qatar Rail and Public Works Authority (Ashghal) in this regards.
With regard to safety in the workplace, Al Shuaibi said that the reports to the ministry indicated that the accidents at the workplace were very low adding that Qatar is moving forward towards more precautionary measures for the safety of workers at construction sites.
He added that the labor inspection department represented by the occupational safety and health department, works on consolidating the concept of health and safety at the workplace, The labor inspection department is keep conducting regular and surprise inspections and run awareness campaigns, to ensure the safety and heath of workers at worksites and labor accommodation, he added.
Quality and Safety Manager at Ashghal, Eng Khaled Al Emadi said the conference is important to strengthen the occupational safety and health of workers in the State of Qatar and to benefit from all local and international experiences and expertise.
The Building and Wood Workers’ International (BWI) announced its participation in the conference.
