Doha: Torba Farmers Market in the Education City is inviting Qatar residents to donate books that people will enjoy reading while at the market.

The hugely popular Farmers Market at the Ceremonial Court is planning to introduce a library area that will have books and coffee for visitors to enjoy. In the coming weeks, visitors at the market will be able to read books, have coffee and also exchange books with other visitors at the newly set-up library area.

For this purpose, at the entrance of the market, a stand has been put up where books or magazines can be dropped today and also in the coming weekend.

The Farmers Market made this announcement on its Instagram page, adding that the books can be fiction or non-fiction in any language, but should be in good condition, for others to enjoy.

The team has already received around 160 books and the response has been fantastic writes an official to our query about the initiative. "People are also dropping off their much loved books and asking us to take care of them, which is lovely. We have had books in English, Arabic, Italian and Romanian so far," adds the official.

They also stressed that since the market receives visitors from different countries "it would be lovely to have some books in various languages.”

The market already has a small section where few books are placed on shelves along with bean bags for visiting families to read and enjoy while shopping.

Torba, which in Arabic means soil, is a community-inspired initiative aimed at supporting local food producers and agriculture, while encouraging the public to lead healthier, more active lifestyles.

The market offers fresh produce including fruit and vegetables, homemade preserves, syrups, and jars of butter, and handicrafts and gardening supplies.

The market is accessible from Education City’s Gate 2 and is open every Friday from 7:30am to 11:30am and 12:30pm to 5pm, and Saturday from 8am to 6pm.
