Traffic accidents in Qatar will likely be less this year as a number of new roads have opened ensuring smoother traffic flow.
Among the roads and intersections that recently opened include the Al Sailiya subway, and the Sports intersection which is 80 percent complete, said a senior official at the Traffic department.
“More roads and streets in Doha will be open later and that will help in easing traffic jam, and as schools have opened we are asking motorists to follow traffic rules strictly,” Brigadier Mohammed Saad Al Kharji, Director of the General Directorate of Traffic Department, said yesterday.
During the launch of ‘Back-to-school’ campaign at Omar Bin Al-Khattab Independent Second Primary School For Boys, he said that traffic patrols have been deployed at important and main intersections and roundabouts to ban trucks with no prior permission from entering.
Al Kharji said that ‘Back to school’ campaign is an annual celebration which aims to spread traffic awareness among students. It is organized by the General Directorate of Traffic Department at MoI to send awareness messages to students on how to cross the road safely as well as the proper way of using school buses. It also orients teachers on how to secure their students.
He told parents to teach their children to arrive early to avoid traffic jam, which helps them to avoid committing violations like high speed or taking wrong lanes.
During the launch of the campaign, gifts like school supplies were distributed to students that carry traffic awareness messages.
Major Jaber Mohamed Rashid Odaiba, Assistant Director of Media & Traffic Awareness section of Traffic Department, said: “The campaign has focused on the opening day of schools because it represents a big event for students.”
He added in a press statement that the traffic awareness activities will cover all schools, and hoped that the campaign will achieve its goal, which is an academic year without any traffic accidents.
He added that the campaign will continue from the first day until the last day of school.
On the gifts which were distributed to students, he said the aim was to remind the students of traffic awareness messages throughout the school year through the educational tools they use on a daily basis.
“We have a plan to secure students by deploying patrols at main roads, intersections and areas which have more schools and to avoid traffic jam,” he said.
