Doha: Career Village, an event designed to promote a culture of career-awareness and ambition among Qatar’s youth, begun yesterday at the Education City Student Center.

The three-day event organized by the Qatar Career Development Center (QCDC) a member of Qatar Foundation (QF) was attended by about 500 high school students on the first day.  Career Village is one of several initiatives organised by QCDC, to guide Qatari youth into making informed decisions to maximise their potential and prospects of their future careers.

Representatives from 28 leading Qatari companies and institutions drawn from a diverse range of eight sectors such as education, finance and business, energy and manufacturing, communication and transportation, health, security media and culture  participate in the event.  Also several universities and other academic institutions take part in the ‘Career Village.’

It aims at acquainting high school students with the career pathways available to them in these sectors and the dynamics of a changing Qatari labour market, Shaheen Al Sulaiti, Senior Operations Officer at QCDC told The Peninsula.

“Career Village aims at introducing students to new career paths and academic programmes. Students can engage with participating institutions and universities to inquire about available opportunities and take part in activities organised by those institutions to familiarise themselves with career options,” he said.

“Therefore the Career Village provides secondary school students an insight into the workings of the real-world practices and give them a taste of practical experience. This gives students an early understanding of the job market and how best they can plan higher education and career path,” he added.

This year’s ‘Career Village’ the second edition of the event  and aims at attracting at least 1500 students. Yesterday the event saw around 500 male students from public schools and today will welcome female students and tomorrow the event will be open for private schools.

Also Career Village will open its doors to families, parents, academic and career counselors tomorrow (Wednesday).

Mohammed Al Malki a grade ten student from the Doha Independent Secondary School for Boys said, “It gave us an idea about the higher education opportunities and job market requirements. I am interested in taking up a profession in healthcare and learnt a lot at the Hamad Medical Corporation’s booth.”
