Doha: The number of deaths due to traffic accidents have come down in 2020 compared to 2019.
The General Directorate of Traffic’ statistics for 2020 showed that the number of deaths due to traffic accidents in 2020 was 138 cases compared to 154 the year earlier.
Out the 138 deaths, 69 were motorists, 26 passengers and 43 pedestrians.
In 2015, the total number of traffic deaths was 227 while in 2019 the number decreased to 154 death cases. The statistics indicated that the total number of road fatalities in 2016 was 178, while in 2017 the number was 177 and in 2018 it stood at 168.
In a press conference held today at the Department headquarter, they announced that 90.1 percent of accidents last year were minor accidents, which represent 7,155 accidents, and 8.2 percent were serious accidents (648 accidents) and deaths 1.7 percent (138).
The main reason for accidents according to the report was reckless driving, which is 42.4 percent of the total cases.
The second reason for accidents, 21.9 percent, was due to not giving enough space with other vehicles.
The department said it registered 1.5 million (1,574,812) traffic violations in 2020, which is 20.1 percent less than 2019 when they registered 1.9 million violations (1,969,896).
