Doha: Oil and gas giants ExxonMobil and the Qatar Olympic Committee have unveiled a new partnership in support of National Sport Day.

The three-year long deal was announced at a press conference by Sheikh Saoud Bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, Secretary General of the Qatar Olympic Committee (QOC), and  Bart Cahir, President & General Manager of ExxonMobil Qatar Inc.

“We thank Mr Cahir for his support and leadership in making ExxonMobil Qatar and Official Sponsor of the National Sport Day” said Sheikh Saoud.

Sheikh Saoud added: “It is an honour and a privilege to welcome them on board this prestigious initiative adopted by His Highness the Heir Apparent Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani.”

Sheikh Saoud highlighted the important role ExxonMobil played in sport in Qatar in the last few years, a role that shows the commitment of the company in the country on a social level.

Cahir expressed his excitement, on behalf of ExxonMobil, to be able to support what he defined as an important and wide-reaching community initiative geared towards promoting an active and healthy lifestyle among Qatar residents.

“Energy development is more than oil and gas production” said Cahir during the press conference.

“It is about delivering sustainable, long term benefits for local communities, and there is no more meaningful event for this than the National Sport Day,” he added.

Across the country, ministries, government departments, public and private sector organisations and sports clubs will be organising sporting activities for all on February 12.

The event aims to create awareness about sports and its health benefits.        THE PENINSULA
