As Qatar is fast moving towards green transformation, the demand from various private and public sector parties for green walls and roof gardens is also rising, says an expert.

“We have recently launched these services as people have been asking for it for quite some time,” said a representative of Nakheel Landscapes on the sidelines of Green Expo Forum 2016 held in Doha, yesterday.

He said Nakheel Landscapes were providing services to many government organizations as well as private individuals for developing green-walls (indoors and outdoors) and roof gardens. He said now people were taking more interest in environment and greenery.

He said green walls also called vertical gardens could be made on existing walls or freestanding wall structures.

“They not only maintain the ecosystem but also increase aesthetics of the place particularly when made indoors,” he said, adding that in green walls, plant growing medium was always on the face of the wall with an integrated irrigation system.

Regarding roof gardens, another representative of the company said that mostly those gardens were ordered by commercial buildings and companies.  “As the people living in villas have ample space for maintaining lawns therefore they do not demand roof gardens,” he said, adding that the orders for the green services were on the rise with the change in weather.

Another employee of Nakheel said that the man-made forest being built in Qatar will have around one million different kinds of trees and the work was in progress at full speed.

“The forest situated in Umm Salal Ali is being irrigated with treated water. It will not only help casting positive effects on environment and ecosystem but will also provide another recreation place to residents as it will have some recreational parks in it,” he added.

He said most of the trees were native so that they resist extreme weather conditions during summer.
