Doha: Qatar has been officially selected to host the next edition of the West Asian Rugby Championship for men and women, which will be organised next October, Qatars Rugby, Hockey and Cricket Federation (QRHCF) announced on the sidelines meetings of the Asian Rugby Union Executive Office.
Qatar is the first Arab and Gulf country to win the honour of hosting the Asian Championship, which confirms the great position that Doha enjoys within the expanded family of global sport.
This edition is the first tournament to be held in Asia due to the COVID-19 crisis and Qatar is the only country that was able to host a Rugby tournament after a two-year hiatus.
The tournament will be held from October 7 to 10. Five men's teams have confirmed their participation in the tournament, namely Qatar, Iran, UAE, Lebanon and Palestine, in addition to six women teams - Qatar, Iran, UAE, Iraq, Lebanon and Syria.
Qatar’s women team won the titles at the previous two editions.
The organising committee is chaired by Abdullah Aman Al Khater, and its membership includes Issa Yaqoub Al Yaqoub as Vice-Chairman, Hamad Anbar Al Abdullah as Director of the Tournament, and Iman Ahmed Muhammad as the official in charge of the medical bubble.
The committee underlined that it will continue to meet regularly in the coming days to secure health requirements in accordance with a number of strict measures during Qatar’s hosting of the tournament, in coordination with the Ministry of Public Health, in order to ensure the highest standards of success.
QRHCF President Youssef Jaham Al Kuwari expressed his happiness with choosing Qatar to host the next edition of the West Asian Rugby Championship for men and women.
He noted that the preparations to host the event is on track and looked forward to host a best edition of this tournament.
The QRHCF President stressed the importance of the event said, expressing his hope that the new generation will benefit from this historic hosting which will provide the Qatar players with opportunity to meet with the best ranked players from the world champions in recent years.
He stressed that organising such an important event at this time will enhance Qatar's organisational capabilities, which has become well known for its state-of-the-art sports facilities, stadiums and sports halls equipped with the latest sports equipment in accordance with the highest international standards.
