Public lectures and other awareness activities about cancer were held at the Al Wakrah and Um Sala health centres.
In a bid to fight against cancer, Primary Health Care Corporation (PHCC) is aiming to raise awareness, increase knowledge about cancer, providing information regarding its causes and importance of early detection and treatment throughout the year.
Awareness programmes will be held under the slogan ‘You are Not alone’ at all health centers and outreach programmes.
“The awareness activities we held to mark the World Cancer Day will continue and the message will be spread through different channels including social media,” a source told The Peninsula yesterday.
“The activities will not limit on selected types of cancer, but will talk about all cancers which has a high prevalence in the country,” said the source.
‘You are not alone’ campaign was initially held at Al Wakra and Um Sala Health Centers on the World Cancer Day, on February 4.
Various activities were held at the two health centers aiming to raise awareness and increase local knowledge about all types of cancers, providing information regarding its causes and the importance of early detection and treatment.
The health centers dedicated a group of working teams including social workers, nurses and medical staff to present one to one advice and lectures on early detection, diagnosis and long-term referrals.
Dr Maysoon Al Hakeem, Family Medicine consultant in Al Wakra Health Centre provided information on different types of cancer, spotting symptoms, causes and consequences, as well as the possibility of periodic tests at PHCC health centers. Following this, Health Educator Awatef Ahmad introduced methods of self-examination, emphasising on visiting the doctor should you spot any relevant symptoms.
Dr Nasseema Hussain, Family Medicine consultant at Al Wakra Health Centre delivered a lecture focused on cervical cancer reinforcing early detection can prevent it.
She also presented general advice promoting a healthy lifestyle across different age groups.
The World Cancer Day efforts this year follow several awareness campaign from the ‘Early detection for a healthy life’ programme, which is an initiative launched by the Ministry of Public Health, within the framework of the ‘National Programme of Cancer’ in Qatar and in line with the vision of the National strategy for Health 2011-2016 in Qatar.
