Doha: The Qatar Olympic Committee (QOC) opened Al Wukair Playground as part of an ambitious plan to increase community participation in sport, the QOC has said in a press release.
The project build under the Village Project, covers an area of 10,000 square meters, includes football, volleyball, basketball and handball playgrounds in addition walking track, gymnasium hall, mosque, cafeteria and security room.
The Al Wukhair Playground cosntruction is part of the nationwide plan for the integration of sports and recreational facilities.
Speaking during the inauguration of the playground Engineer Abdulrahman Al Malki, Director of QOC Engineering Projects Department stressed that Al Wukair Playground aim to provide integrated facilities that allow all members of community to practice sports and raise the awareness for the importance of sports for health.
“The aim of building sports centres and playfields in residential areas is to provide with sports facilities to people at their doorsteps and for people to practice different type of sports,” Al Malki said.
The engineering projects department he said has studied the needs of all areas of the state and developed a five year plan till 2016 to establish new 15 playgrounds.
“The new playgrounds will be established according to environment friendly design that rationalizes energy consumption,” he added.
Earlier in February 2012, the QOC announced its plan to set up 15 new playgrounds over five years across the country. The project will see three grounds being completed every year until 2016.
The opening ceremony was attended by Sheikh Saoud bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, QOC Secretary General, Saeed Ali Al Marri, Member of the Central Municipal Council (CMC) of Mesaeed and. Hamdan Bu Sherback, Director of Al Wakrah Municipality as well as a number of QOC officials.
The Barzan Olympic Park inaugurated on April 29, 2012 was the first Olympic Park to be built in Qatar.
The Barzan Olympic Park is part of the plan to provide more recreational facilities for people of the country.
It also aims to treat the shortage of recreational spaces especially outside the capital city of Doha.
The park includes green areas, restaurants, kids zone, two football playgrounds, two tennis courts, basketball court, mosque, swimming pool, cycling track, fountains, walking lanes and restrooms.
The QOC will also build four women sports centres including sports and social facilities for women such as swimming pools, gymnasiums, health centres, walking tracks, nursery centres, cafeterias and mosques, the press release adds.
The QOC has embarked on a plan to devise a Sport Sector’s Strategy (SSS) for the upcoming Olympic Session (2012-2016).
The Sport Sector’s Strategy is part of the National Development Strategy 2011-2016 which aims at fulfilling Qatar’s National Vision 2030.
The ambitious Sport Sector’s Strategy seeks to improve the integration of sports and various specialized facilities.
The SSS also aims to improve the process of managing the nation’s athletic talent.
