Doha: To preserve the environment and address climate change, the Ministry of Municipality in coordination with municipalities and its partners from private sector has intensified efforts to curb the uses of single-use plastic bags in implementation of a ministerial decision in this regard.

Over 20,000 eco-friendly, biodegradable and multi-use bags have been distributed under a month-long campaign to educate companies and people about the ministerial decision No. 143 of 2022 regulating the uses of plastic bags, the Ministry tweeted.

The drive ‘No For Plastic’, which concluded recently, was organised by Al Daayen Municipality with the participation of Umm Salal Municipality, Al Khor and Al Zakhira Municipality, Al Shamal Municipality and a retail chain Monoprix under the slogan, ‘Together For Sustainable Environment and Free From Plastic.

The campaign covered 15 schools of different grades and 13 commercial and services complexes educating people about the importance of replacing single-use plastic bags with eco-friendly and multi-use plastic bags to preserve the environment.

The Ministry of Municipality represented by Health Monitoring Sections of all municipalities has been implementing Decision No. 143 of 2022 regulating uses of single-use plastic bags since November 15, 2022.

The decision prohibits shopping centres, companies and institutions using single-use plastic bags, which should be replaced with eco-friendly and biodegradable bags.

Inspectors from Health Monitoring Sections at all municipalities conduct inspection drives of food outlets and shopping complexes to ensure their adherence to the conditions related to plastic bags in packaging commodities.
