New York: The United Nations Security Council warned on Thursday against the formation of a parallel government in Sudan, emphasizing that such a move could exacerbate the war and deepen the humanitarian crisis in the country.
In a statement, the Council expressed deep concern over a pact signed last week by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and their allies with political and military factions allied to them, aiming to establish a "Government of Peace and Unity" in areas under their control.
The Council warned that this step could further escalate the ongoing conflict in Sudan, fragment the country, and worsen an already dire humanitarian situation. It urged all parties to immediately cease hostilities and engage in political dialogue and diplomatic efforts to achieve a lasting ceasefire.
Last week, the RSF, with support from its allies, announced its intention to form a "Government of Peace and Unity." However, this move has faced strong regional and international opposition, with calls to end the war that has been ongoing for more than two years and to preserve Sudans security and territorial integrity.
