DOHA: A first of its kind in the country and a dedicated paediatric rehabilitation programme will soon be introduced at the Qatar Rehabilitation Institution (QRI), said a senior official.

With the implementation of the programme, inpatient services will be provided for paediatric cases which will compliment the ongoing outpatient clinics at the hospital, Dr Wafa Al Yazeedi (pictured), Chairperson of QRI, told The Peninsula.

“The first paediatric rehabilitation programme will be introduced soon at QRI. We are in preparation for that. Once it is introduced, we will be able provide inpatient services for paediatric rehabilitation,” she said.

The new service will be available at the eighth floor of QRI with a paediatric team comprised of paediatric specialists from a variety of disciplines including medicine, nursing, nutrition, psychology, speech therapy and occupational therapy dedicated to seeing children overcome the challenges.

“The paediatric rehabilitation programme will also enable QRI to qualify for approval from the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities, or CARF, a US-based independent, nonprofit accreditor of health and human services committed to ensuring providers meet the highest standards for care delivered by their services and programs,” says Dr Al Yazeedi.

QRI will also introduce other services such as inpatient services for pain management and for people with disability.

QRI is one of the three new hospitals in the Hamad Medical City and the region’s largest tertiary rehabilitation hospital with 193 beds. Its facilities include seven hydrotherapy pools, 10 exercise rooms, supervised gyms and a Simulated Living Suite which provide patients with faster access to rehabilitative care.

QRI has provided care to more than 243,000 outpatients and inpatients since opening of its first clinic in December 2016, said Dr Al Yazeedi.

“Indeed, we have a growing demand for the services and we are trying to cater all patients needs,” she added.

QRI’s patient-centred, interdisciplinary approach is delivered across the Stroke, Traumatic Brain Injury, Spinal Cord Injury, Musculoskeletal/Pain Management and Pediatric Rehabilitation Programs. These have been developed for acute care, sub-acute care, day rehabilitation patients and outpatients as well as those in community based rehabilitation.

“The centre is unique, because of its holistic services. We provide high-quality rehabilitation services through the most technologically advanced patient-centred care. We follow the admission criteria, scope of service and discharge criteria in order to ensure that the patient is following the right patient care process,” said Dr Al Yazeedi.

“The programme based approach ensures that a patient’s needs and expectations are consistently met throughout their recovery journey. These programmes are made up of clinical and therapy services which are selected and adapted according to each patient’s needs by our multidisciplinary team of clinicians and therapists,” she added.

QRI is also working closely with other hospitals and facilities of the Hamad Medical Corporation with an aim to help patient reintegration back into the community.
